Going into new situations with an open mind is needed. In addition, to what Emma had brought up about acceptance being key. Integration is an act combining groups that are different in race, religion, ethnicity, or social status into a whole. These two terms are different in the way that desegregation is the initial allowance of two separate groups to attend the same facility, and the integration is the act of taking advantage of the desegregation and mixes the population up. A way that the ethnic or cultural barriers can be further broken down is to educate the people in schools about the various ethnic backgrounds. Instead of just saying, you can't turn away someone for x reasons, it now forced employers to give certain people jobs. Those people were the ones who would be turned away other wise. It is obviously good for the minorities who it helps, however it put white men at a disadvantage. I think this is interesting because, it in a way goes along with the cartoon in our ch. 25 packet. The one with the white man who can't pass the literacy test, yet is still given the right to vote. This Action makes it so that when a minority and white men are neck and neck for a job, the white man will not just get it because of his race. I think that is a little hypocritical though. It is a weird way to fix an issue due to it being so easily controversial. Efforts for equality should truly be equal. MEanwhile, I do understand the need to really enforce the civil rights. White men at the time would do anything to get out of hiring a person of a different race. It is justified simply due to the time and circumstances. I do not think it was the best effort during the Civil Rights movement, but it made a point.","dateCreated":"1333322517","smartDate":"Apr 1, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"Kldobson","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/Kldobson","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"52425992","body":"Affirmative Action was the governments way to making up for the previous discrimination on the minorities. In the past women and the minorities were not allowed in certain schools, or weren't allowed to work in certain job fields because they were thought of as inferior to the white male. Affirmative Action when put into place opens up many job opportunities for the minorities, but it does open up a new form of discrimination called reverse discrimination where the majority is now being discriminated against. Affirmative Action even though has its reasoning and is addressing a god point in my eyes is unfair. This is because people are not being chosen for their ability or skills they are being accepted so the school or workplace will look diverse. I just believe you cant fix discrimination with discrimination, because it will really get you nowhere closer to achieving your goals. It just creates new problems and you will get stuck in an endless discrimination loop that you were trying to get away from in the first place, and you will have accomplished nothing.","dateCreated":"1333326821","smartDate":"Apr 1, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"aneuenahus","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/aneuenahus","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"52427760","body":"Affirmative Action was meant to give more opportunities and jobs to blacks who previously had been turned away from many. Advantages were that it gave minorities in America a chance and allowed them to have more of an opportunity to live a better life. Disadvantages were that even if the minority is unqualified, they still get whatever it is over the qualified individual, because certain places (like work places and college) are required to accept a certain amount of minorities such as women and blacks.
